February 1930. Ho Chi Minh forms the Vietnamese Communist party.
May 1941: Ho Chi Minh forms the Viet Minh. Primarily a Communist fighting force for the Vietnamese who took part in insurgent fighting against the French in later years.
September 2nd: Ho Chi Minh declares Vietnamese independence. Only months later in december, the Vietminh start fighting the French.
1954: The French are defeated in Vietnam by Ho Chi Minh’s Communist Vietminh fighting forces. After talks in Geneva the French leave and Vietnam is divided into two. A Communist North and Democratic South.
October 1955: Diem elected as first South Vietnamese President.
May-Aug 1963: Diem faces angry protests by Buddhists.
November 3rd 1963: ARVN forces stage a Coup in South Vietnam and without help from American intervention President Diem is assassinated.
November 3: President John F Kennedy is shot.
December 1963: North Vietnamese Army (NVA) invades South Vietnam causing a civil war.
August 1964: North Vietnamese gunships attack US Navy vessels in the Gulf of Tonkin. Some would say this is the beginning of mass American involvement.
1965: American Marines and Military personal begin their operations in South Vietnam.

- Rolling Thunder is launched by President Johnson. It contained mass bombings of the Ho Chi Minh trail (a mass trail for supplies and men supplying the VC and NVA.) and North Vietnamese cities, bases, training camps and Hanoi.
American are ordered to carry out offensive operations such as seek and destroy and the battle of La Drang takes place. The first major American contact with the NVA and VC (Viet Cong).
Ky, the first President since Diem is sworn in.
The number of American troops is raised to 35 000.
The first student protests of the war start to take place.
1966:
First TV hearings of the Vietnam war take place i America.
The first students protest in South Vietnam, lead by buddhists and monks.
1967:
Nguyen Van Theiu is sworn in as the eighth South Vietnamese President since Diem.
American drafting system is introduced. Which turns large majorities of young Americans, especially students angry and don’t agree with the war.
1968:
January. The ‘Tet’ offensive begins. A mass attack lead by the NVA in the peaceful Vietnamese Tet holiday by attacking all major South Vietnamese towns and cities. Such as suicide squads over running the US embassy and a major attack lead on Siagon, Hue and the American base at Khe Sanh. Even though a massive attack and catching the Anti-Communist forces by surprise and seizing critical vatnge points; it ends as a defeat for the NVA and VC. With their strategic positions taken back.
Mai Lai. A horrific stage in American Military history and the war. When Charlie Company of the 1st Battalion of the American infantry. They move in and kill between 300 and 500 unarmed civilians. It’s a turning point in the war which turns thousand of Americans agains the US fight in South Vietnam.

1971:
February. There is a massive operation to try and cut off the massive Ho Chi Minh trail by ARVN forces, but it fails.
June 13, The Pentagon papers are released.
December 26, President Nixon gives orders to start bombing North Vietnam again.
1972:
March 30-April 8, the Easter Offensive begins.
October 8-11, America and North Vietnam begin to start agreements to end the war, but South Vietnam rejects offers.
1973:
January 23, Nixon signs the Paris agreement.
February, The first American POW’s start to be released.
March, The last American combat troops begin to finally leave.
1975:
February, the North Vietnamese being their offensive into South Vietnam.
1976:
- July, Vietnam is finally unified into one Communist state.
