The Vietnam War or otherwise known as the Second Indo-China War, and known in Vietnam as the Resistance War Against America or the American War. The war was a direct result of the first Indo-China war (19th December 1946 until 1 August 1954) which was after the withdrawal of Japanese troops from Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh led a rebellion against The French occupying force after they’d seized Indochina after world war II.
The North Vietnamese or Viet Minh which they were officially called led a small scale insurgency war against French bases and patrols. But with The Viet Minh being a Communist guerrilla force, they won the support of the Chinese and Soviet Union. Being funded and aided with supplies and modern military equipment. With the French winning the support of the West and Anti-Communist governments funded by the U.S. the war raged on, but due to the unforgiving terrain the French were unable to fight a conventional war. Making it hard to use tanks and air cover. Which showed devastating results at the French’s defeat at Dien Bien Phu.
On the 21st of July 1954, there was a Geneva conference resulting in the division of Vietnam and the French leaving the country. In the North it under the control of Ho Chi Minh and his Viet Minh army. In the south it was to hold free elections under Emperor Bao Dai. But ousted by his Prime Minister Ngo Dnh Diem, in the creation of the republic of Vietnam. In only in a short time of 3 years, insurgents/guerrilla fighters backed by the Communist North lead a guerrilla war against the Democratic South after disagreeing to hold elections to unify as one country. This situation escalated and is became what we know as the Vietnam War.
With the Guerrilla forces being backed from the Communist North, China and The Soviet Union the situation looked bad for the Democratic South, backed by Capitalist America. President after President in America claimed that South Vietnam must not fall under the Communist banner of the North. The common justification was the ‘domino effect’ and Communism would apparently be on South East Asia, Australia’s and Americas doorstep.
